The cartoon shows a black man with a very long nose, with words such as “the private sector is doing fine”, “transparency”. The man refers to Barack Obama. The appearance of the cartoon resembles him. He is an African American, has a big ear and thick mouth. The cartoonist’s view towards Obama is negative, thinking that he is a liar. By exaggerating Obama’s facial characteristics such as ear, nose, he looks silly and hilarious. He is drawn with an extremely long nose which signifies Pinocchio. It implies that he is a liar. The wordings that show along his nose refers to the promises he made before his inauguration. However, he has his eyes closed, showing an apathetic look which means that he is not willing to push forward his promises wholeheartedly. Whenever he makes more promises, his nose grows longer. He mentions that the private sector of United State is doing fine. It is a lie because businesses still have not recovered from the financial crisis. The concern on transparency and energy policy remain untouched. He sometimes put the blame on Bush and Gop to direct other attention on his failure in implementing policies. The claim on “I’m the most fiscally conservative president since IKE” is invalid as he has spent a handsome amount of treasury on saving the businesses. The cartoon is sarcastic to mock Obama’s inability in uplifting his promises.
In my opinion, the cartoonist fails to see the full picture of the American’s politics and solely put the blame on Obama. The parliament is in a deadlock during his reign. The republicans outweigh the democrats. The policies that ate proposed by Obama are being denied. Therefore, the responsibilities of stagnation of parliament should lie within the system of itself rather than being bear solely by Obama.
